English Version
Mexico is recognized worldwide for it legendary wealth of art as well as is unique cultural map full of signs and symbols that authentically express the feeling and thinking of their people throughout history. Mexican folk art is the manifestation of the national identity from the hands of its artists, expressed in a myriad of materials and techniques, beliefs and customs. In order to promote high-impact projects of folk art and the preservation of traditions and cultural diversity of Mexico, in 1999, the Association of Friends of the Museo de Arte Popular, AAMAP (http://amigosmap.blogspot.com/) was created.
The AAMAP lays the groundwork for the establishment in 2006 of Museo de Arte Popular ( http://www.map.df.gob.mx/) in Mexico City, MAP, a showcase for great pieces and work of Mexican artisans and dedicated to spread the wealth and value of Mexican folk art.
This year, the MAP and AAMAP, together with the state governments of Nayarit and Jalisco undertook Vochol ®; an innovative project that succeeds in becoming an exceptional event in the history of Mexican folk art, which shows the artistic ability of the Huichol; an indigenous group that instantly captivates anyone who appreciates beauty and enigmatic original designs.
Over four thousand six hundred hours spent eight Huichol artists to translate their inspiration into a magical and colorful design in a white Volkswagen sedan used as a canvas. The work involved the careful placement in the body of more than 90 kg of chaquira (beads) and 14 kg of artisan resin as adhesive. We used different techniques and materials to line the seats of the vehicle and to decorate the wheels, steering wheel and the interior roof of the vehicle. Vochol ® is a work of art that enhances and dramatically displays the Mexican folk art. It is a unique art-object that integrates exceptionally Huichol art without hesitation that will arouse the interest of art lovers.
During 2010 and 2011 will develop a comprehensive program of advocacy and dissemination of Vochol ®. From December 9, 2010 to January 2011, will hold an exhibition season and guided tours to Vochol® within the MAP. Vochol ® will also visit cultural and educational institutions and partner companies.
The project will culminate in an international auction sale of Vochol ® where all proceeds will go to protect and promote the work of more than eight million artisans involved in Mexican folk art creation.
We invite you to learn and be part of Vochol ®, but above all to help spread the wealth and diversity of roots, traditions and artistic skills that Mexican artisans offer to the world.
