Vochol® is the first Huichol objet d’art on wheels in the world. This is unprecedented –never to be repeated in the history of popular art– and spectacularly extols the cultural and artistic wealth of Mexico.

THE PROJECT

In 2010, the Museum of Popular Art (MAP) and the Association of Friends of the Museum of Popular Art (AAMAP), together with the governments of the States of Jalisco and Nayarit, embarked on the Vochol® project.
This innovative project is a testimony to the artistic abilities of the Huichol people, an indigenous group, instantly captivating viewers through the enigmatic beauty and original design employed in the project.
Eight Huichol artists devoted more than nine thousand hours of their time to transferring their inspiration to a magical, colorful design embedded on a Volkswagen car by way of canvas. The minute, detailed work entailed covering the body of the car with more than 90 kilograms of glass seed beads, as well as the use of diverse techniques and materials to cover the seats of the car, decorate the rims, the steering wheel and the dashboard.
A broad program of promotional activities to publicize the existence of Vochol® will be implemented throughout 2011 at the national and international levels. The project will conclude with the international sale and/or auction of Vochol®, with all proceeds donated to the AAMAP, allowing the Association to continue upholding its objective of safeguarding and promoting the work of more than eight million Mexican artisans.

CREATION

The Vochol® intervention was carried out over more than 7 months by the hands of Huichol artists in the states of Nayarit and Jalisco. They used more than 2 million 277 thousand glass seed beads, 16 kilograms of special resin, fabric, paint and yarn.
The Cabañas Hospice in Guadalajara, Jalisco, the State Center for Popular and Indigenous Cultures in the state of Nayarit, and the Museum of Popular Art in Mexico City were the headquarters used by the Huichol artists for producing the Vochol® intervention.

WORLDWIDE PRESENTATION

Vochol® was launched internationally at a grand event toward the end of 2010, with personalities from the political, cultural, business and social circles of Mexico in attendance, as well as national press. Guests enjoyed the performance of the traditional Huichol ceremony, led by the two artisan families who worked on the objet d’art intervention.
The event was covered by more than 35 media representatives, and Vochol® so captivated the members of national and international press that more than one hundred notes were published in Mexico’s principal electronic and printed news media, in addition to renowned media specializing in art and culture, in the wake of the official announcement.

THE HUICHOL

The Huichol group, also known as Wixaritari, is one of the best-known indigenous groups of Mexico. The Huichol have settled in the Western Sierra Madre, primarily in the region comprising the states of Jalisco and Nayarit, as well as part of Durango, Colima and Zacatecas.
Renowned and valued internationally, Huichol art work offers genuine, legendary pieces that envelop the viewer in the enigmatic beauty, amazing creativity and unique originality that characterize their designs.
Huichol art is known for its use of special techniques, such as covering surfaces with glass seed beads, wooden boards covered in colorful thread or yarn, as well as stunning garments and musical instruments.

THE MUSEUM OF POPULAR ART (MAP)

In 2006, the Museum of Popular Art (MAP) opened its doors, becoming a showcase for magnificent works of Mexican art and handcrafts, thus promoting the wealth and value of these art forms both in Mexico and abroad.
Among other objectives, MAP seeks to promote and publicize the work of these men and women who with their labor keep ancestral traditions alive, thus nourishing our identity; MAP offers temporary and permanent exhibits,
as well as extramural activities, seminars, conferences, courses and workshops.
The Museum of Popular Art enables one to discover that cultures in Mexico are not isolated; that the creation of popular art is nourished through traditions embraced by the people; and, that no tradition will survive without the creation needed to preserve it.  http://www.map.df.gob.mx/

THE ASSOCIATION OF FRIENDS OF THE MUSEUM OF POPULAR ART (AAMAP)

The Association of Friends of the Museum of Popular Art (AAMAP) was established to foster the creation of popular art and to collaborate in the promotion and appreciation of creative work produced by some eight million persons involved in art and handcraft processes in Mexico.
The AAMAP creates and supports high impact projects that encourage the production of popular Mexican art and handcrafts, with the purpose of preserving the traditions and vast cultural diversity of the country.  http://amigosmap.blogspot.com/
